An article from INSEAD about research into the reasons why Nokia fell from market dominance to insignificance within the mobile market, in just a few years.

To quote the opening paragraph:

“Nokia’s fall from the top of the smartphone pyramid is typically put down to three factors by executives who attempt to explain it: 1) that Nokia was technically inferior to Apple, 2) that the company was complacent and 3) that its leaders didn’t see the disruptive iPhone coming.

It turns out there was a widespread culture of fear, coupled with lack of technical understanding among top management; which fostered deceptive communication, and wrong focus at all levels. Unsurprising, this is not a recipe for how to get the best out of creative knowledge workers.”
