Citation scores are berated as being a poor predictor of article quality.. but still the best one available. Scholars are also often judged on citation scores. So the question of how to increase ones citation score is salient. The most important is of course to conduct high quality, relevant and interesting research. But is this enough?
A recent study on a randomized study, where half of a sample of published articles were tweeted by an influential account, the other half, did not get this benefit. The results indicate an average of 2,4 more citations after one year for the Tweeted articles.
Publishing open access was also strongly associated with more exposure.
